Springfield Park Board Chess Club Open (Completed) Weekend of October 16-17, 2010
Barry Paul Manthe of Missouri won clear first in a 5 round Swiss with a score of 4.5 and took home $500. Ron Luther, James Long and James L. Smith split tied for 2nd and split the 2nd-3rd guaranteed prize money. (Cross table below.) In addition, Ron Luther, Life Master, from Kansas City held a simul on Friday October 15th playing 12 boards and went undefeated. Thomas Rehmeier directed and was assisted by Bob Holliman both of the Missouri Chess Association. All Missouri players are encouraged to join this organization and help promote chess in Missouri. Class prizes were awarded based on 26 entries or 50% of the projected prizes were paid out. Photos of the event can be found on the photos page tab "2010 Springfield Open". Please check out the Chess blog as there was a bit of a controversy in the last round and while it was resolved per the rules in a professional manner some reflections on what happened seem in order and serve to remind us all to know and understand the rules of chess. An update of the club's finances will follow in the next few days as most of the treasury was used to put on this event. (Nov 18, 2010 that update is made). Upset awards of chess bags were given in three rounds and everyone received the club's bookmark, a pen, and a Chess Game Scorebook of 50 games with a commemorative logo to mark the event. The remaining chess club's t-shirts were also distributed.

Chess Demonstration April 9, 2010
James Long, resident expert
Time: 7PM
Our resident expert, James Long, has agreed to do a demonstration this coming Friday, April 9th.
The demonstration was presented to 14 members and non-members on the Demo board. James presented two games he had played and showed where he had gone wrong and explained what move(s) would have better to improve his chances in the games he presented and thus gave those attending things to look for in their games and things to consider to facilitate a better understanding of chess concepts. 4-10-2010
